Not everybody drinks, and not everyone wants to sit in a pub all night (or worse, stand!) So consider a theme to get your guests in the mood, especially if they’re coming straight from work. But do ask them what they enjoy – not everyone wants to dress as a tree fairy.

Visit the venue in person to find out what is included. The best ones will give you your own area and a dedicated member of staff.

Be clear about your budget and how many people you plan to invite. Then you can work out your budget per head before you start contacting venues.

If you need to take a deposit from your guests, do make a note of who pays.

A great party deserves a great invitation. Send it out well in advance, especially if you’re inviting a lot of guests, and don’t forget the RSVP date!

You’d be surprised how many people think with their stomachs, so pre-order menus if possible.

Find out before you book if anyone has any special dietary requirements. Please note that hating Brussels sprouts doesn’t count as a special dietary requirement.

Let your guests know if there is a dress code at the venue, and if partners or friends will be welcome. Ideally before they arrive.

Few people will turn up if they are likely to have problems getting home. If you can’t find a location that suits them all, think about a coach or pre-booked taxis.
